About
Emmanuel Jal, a former Lost Boy and child soldier of South Sudan, now an internationally known hip hop star, has performed with noted artists such as Peter Gabriel and Alicia Keys, and he has also performed at Nelson Mandela's ninetieth birthday celebration. His music is included with the artists Coldplay, Gorillaz, and Radiohead in the fundraising album War Child--Help a Day in the Life, and his music has also been featured in films such as the National Geographic documentary God Grew Tired of Us and Blood Diamond starring Leonardo Di Caprio. He has won the Cadillac Award at the Tribeca International Film Festival for his documentary War Child, and he recently published his memoir, also titled War Child, which chronicles his life as a child soldier. In 2011, Jal was awarded the Common Ground Award for his peace efforts, as he not only works to
build schools in Sudan, but he also provides scholarship opportunities to South Sudanese refugees. Jal is currently working to bring the arts to the schools, as he realizes that the arts serve as an amazing outlet for troubled and angry youth as well as for general growth and creativity.
